Fun Weekend Back

I thought it was going to be a stupid idea to fly back to Austin just for the weekend but it ended up being a great choice. The gig on Friday went great. We had a huge crowd that was really into it. One stranger even sent us an email the next day to tell us how much she enjoyed it. She may also have some connections so that could mean more gigs. For a show that was low pay that no one really wanted to play, this couldn't have turned out better. The only bad thing was that I had a hangover the entire time due to the fact that I stayed out 'til bartime with some Agnew State hashers the night before in Sunnyvale. It was bad enough that I didn't feel like eating at all on Friday, and that only contributed more to my headache. Oh well, my fault.

Saturday I went to Eeyore's and was able to put down a few beers as well as toss a few eggs. I didn't win, but BBK and I got farther than all but three or four in our heat. The Sunday hash was fun as well. It was at Town Lake and I always enjoy running down there. I felt like I got a good workout. Now I'm back in Silicon Valley and having been up since 4:15 am CDT, I need a nap.

Band Resurrected

Sorry for the late notice but IF you happen to read this in the next few hours and IF you don't have any plans tonight and IF you happen to find yourselves out in Lakeway, the band will be playing at Mulligan's from 9-1 tonight [yes the website says 4/20 but it is actually tonight]

We will also be playing somewhere a bit more convenient, Junior's in Round Rock, next Friday 4/27. I will be coming directly from the airport so I ought to be tired and in a horrible mood!

Grindhouse

It's been a week since I've seen this and I'm finally getting around to talking about it. That's not exactly true. Somehow I've found someone to talk to about it almost every day last week. It's packaged as a tribute to b-movie double features, but as I was only a few years old when those movies were in theaters, I can't really comment on how well they captured what that experience was like. But, the experience for me was what I thought it must be like, except for the fact that I was in a sold-out theater rather than a mostly empty one. I think Grindhouse is one of those movies that you really should see in the theater. The trailers before and in between the features, and the various film effects they used aren't going to work when viewed on TV.

I'm trying to figure out why I enjoyed the movies themselves so much. It might be because I didn't expect much out of them so I was surprised when they exceeded my expectations. And they were really different. The directors didn't feel restricted by any of the normal rules of movie-making. They are both violent, fun, sick, corny, gross all at the same time. I don't know how many times I had to turn away from the screen AND laugh, and sorta feel guilty doing so. Go check it out if you can.

Bun Run and Bowling

I stayed up to bar time last night and still managed to get up this morning for the 25th anniversary Scholtzky's Bun Run 5K. I did also manage to forget to pick up my timing chip (this morning and yesterday when I picked up the race packet), or even put on my GPS watch (which was in my car). So, no official time for me. Seeing as the last 5K I ran almost a year ago was at a 9 minute mile pace, I was happy with anything faster than that. I paid attention to the clock at least and had 9:30 at 1m, 17:30 at 2, and 26:35 at the end. Unfortunately I didn't see a clock at the start so I don't know exactly when I started, but I think 30 seconds is about right, so I did it in around 26 minutes.

After the run, I bowled 6 games at Dart Bowl. That's the most I've ever bowled at one time ever. I'm still trying to get my hook to work out but I am getting more consistent. Tomorrow night will probably be the last time I get to bowl this season on the work league. I'm not sure when it ends, but it is probably sometime within the next month and I'll be gone to California for a month starting next week.

After bowling I went home and slept all afternoon.

Stella's gone, but the Mad Cowboys play on

The Mad Cowboys played another late show last night, and it looks like that may be the normal time from now on. I was in a great mood and I even got out on the dance floor a bit, and I somehow managed to not hurt anyone while I was out there. The night flew by, and now I have to wait a whole nother month to see them again!

Simply Sucks

I've had peanut butter jars in my cupboard for years at a time. But, over the last year or so, I've been consuming it like nobody's business. Probably 3 18 oz jars in the last half a year, not on bread, but on crackers. But then I mistakenly bought "Simply Jif," which simply sucks. It has 33% less sugar, low sodium, and tastes like Elmer's glue. I've been trying to suffer through it but I think I just need to throw it out.
