Grindhouse

It's been a week since I've seen this and I'm finally getting around to talking about it. That's not exactly true. Somehow I've found someone to talk to about it almost every day last week. It's packaged as a tribute to b-movie double features, but as I was only a few years old when those movies were in theaters, I can't really comment on how well they captured what that experience was like. But, the experience for me was what I thought it must be like, except for the fact that I was in a sold-out theater rather than a mostly empty one. I think Grindhouse is one of those movies that you really should see in the theater. The trailers before and in between the features, and the various film effects they used aren't going to work when viewed on TV.

I'm trying to figure out why I enjoyed the movies themselves so much. It might be because I didn't expect much out of them so I was surprised when they exceeded my expectations. And they were really different. The directors didn't feel restricted by any of the normal rules of movie-making. They are both violent, fun, sick, corny, gross all at the same time. I don't know how many times I had to turn away from the screen AND laugh, and sorta feel guilty doing so. Go check it out if you can.

I think you enjoyed them so much because it was a true escape from reality....

Many movies these days pull us right back into the reality that we seek escapism from in a theatre and this set of films did the opposite. I have not been THAT energized by movie madness in years...

Rock on!
