What Do You Do With Your Spare Change?

I put mine in a cylindrical tin which I’m guessing is 4”D x 10”H.  When it gets full I take it to a Coinstar machine at the grocery store, and usually recover $100-$120.  Yeah, I know banks will do it for free but I don’t have a local bank and this is worth the convenience to me.  I have a little extra today so I am guessing $140.  We shall see how close my guess was after lunch.

So how close were you?

We do that too, all year, and there's always enough to go to an amusement park in the summer... and the person who guesses closest also gets to get a gift of their choice. I cheat - based on size, you can guess what's inside. And then I get them a gift anyway.

$175, $159 after the service fee. I forgot I had more than a few dollar coins in there. I win!

Actually, most banks won't cash your coin at all anymore, at least not in New England.
We have a pink frog piggy bank that we fill up, and then I roll the coin myself and deposit it. Little B has just started figuring out that putting the coins in that paper roll is a whole lotta fun (but not as much as dumping them out!).

It's harder for me to believe that banks would accepted rolled coins for deposit. How do they know the roll is full, and that there aren't any fakes in the middle? Don't they just have to run it through the coin machine anyway?

Yea, I was pretty surprised and I have no idea how they can trust us. When we started doing this, our initial deposit was between $700-$800 (years of coin), and they just did it on the spot. I can't imagine that they'd check the rolls later and then adjust your account either. Maybe they get so few rolls deposited that they can take the loss, but then I just thought of retailers making depoists. I suppose that's not a lot of rolled coin though. Bottom line: I have no idea!

they'll take it rolled at my bank, but you have to put your name, address and phone # on the roll. Guess that's why. Coinstar just seems easier; plus it makes cool noises. OOOOHH! A squirrel!
